Thunder Begin Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Victory
The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning points deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their championship campaign with a narrow victory over the Houston Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in the second overtime, giving the champions a winning beginning.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the game, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were presented with their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from Luka Doncic was insufficient to prevent his current team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the road team.
The Lakers were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
