The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Frog Game.
While I found the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.
If these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
