Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as police and firefighters went into the residence close to Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location revealed the property reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member triggered the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed Italian media, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the line of duty.
